Nigerians in South Africa awaiting passport renewal are advised to apply for ETC or travel with expired passports during this festive season to Nigeria only.
On the 2nd of December 2022, the Consulate General of Nigeria in South Africa issued a travel advisory to Nigerians in South Africa who wish to travel to Nigeria during this festive season but have yet to receive their passport after applying for a passport renewal; or Nigerians whose passports have expired but are compelled to travel, to exercise caution.
The circular issued in Johannesburg by the Consulate General of Nigeria in South Africa advised Nigerians "whose passports are yet to be produced but have compelling needs to travel to Nigeria during the end-of-the-year festive season to approach the mission for Emergency Travel Certificates."
Where the above option is not possible for whatever reason, the Nigerian government representatives in South Africa advised Nigerians to alternatively travel with their expired passports only if they were traveling to Nigeria. The statement read in part, "In the alternative, use their expired passports for the trip to Nigeria as it is lawful to do so."
NUSA Gauteng hereby calls on its members and Nigerians who may be considering any of the above options to weigh their choices carefully in order to avoid harassment by immigrations at the airports or encounter challenges when returning to South Africa after the festive season.
